Transforming Your Smile with Invisalign

Orthodontic Treatment is an exciting time as you see the transformation of a smile and feel the benefits that your newly aligned teeth provide. General Dentists at Metro Dental in Harvest Hills are excited to offer patients orthodontic care and utilize systems that use brackets and wires, as well as the clear, bracketless system by Invisalign®

When it comes to moving teeth and creating a healthy bite, attention must be given to using orthodontic technology that best serves the patient. This means acknowledging the unique needs of each individual along with the potential limitations of each system. Invisalign® may not be right for every bite – as complex cases that involve extractions and jaw surgery frequently require the use of orthodontic brackets and wires to stabilize a post-surgical bite.

But if Invisalign is a teeth-straightening method that is appropriate for your orthodontic needs – then you’re in for some great orthodontic days. Invisalign® is no longer the new kid on the block – as it was first introduced by Align Technology back in 1999 – that’s when the Backstreet Boys and Shania Twain were on the top of the billboards – so it has considerable years of tweaking and development behind it. Originally only available to Certified Orthodontists - Invisalign® has been used by General Dentists around the world since 2002.

What makes Invisalign® unique? There are a couple of unique features that separates Invisalign from other orthodontic technology. One is that Invisalign’s clear retainers do not necessitate the use of brackets and wires – a definite plus for image-conscious patients who are concerned about meeting social and professional commitments during treatment. Invisalign® also has the added benefit of being removable. Now, when we say removable; this refers to being able to take out an aligner during mealtimes and sporting activities that call for the use of a sports guard. It is not removable in the sense of taking it out whenever you want – as treatment time has been estimated on you having an aligner in your mouth for twenty-two hours a day.

Just like other orthodontic systems, Invisalign® moves teeth by strategically applying force over a desired amount of time. Treatment involves wearing a set of aligners – each one is worn for approximately two weeks before it is changed for the next one in the treatment sequence. No two Invisalign® cases are the same – so treatment time varies according to treatment needs. Of course, routine brushing and flossing are required during treatment (sorry no exceptions!) but the removable feature makes keeping up with this daily habit a breeze.
