Vaping and your oral health

You already know it. Smoking is bad for your oral and general health. Many are then drawn to vaping thinking it is the healthier alternative to smoking.

Are you already using e-cigarettes or thinking of switching to it from traditional tobacco? Is there a better option between the two or should both of them be avoided?

What is Vaping?

Vaping is using electronic cigarettes. While you don't see smoke and smell the same odor from tobacco, e-cigarettes also carry nicotine. Aside from nicotine, e-cigarettes also contain other particles that can pose health risks.

Nicotine is highly addictive. According to research, users eventually vape more to simulate the sensation that traditional smoking gives them. You might not know it, but you’re already consuming similar or even larger quantities of nicotine than you would from traditional smoking.

And while further studies are still being done about it, vaping is already being linked to heart and respiratory diseases and cancer.

Vaping and Your Teeth

Nicotine restricts blood flow, which then limits the oxygen and nutrients that reach the gums. The gum weakens and recedes as a result. Receding gums can increase your risk for cavities. It can also cause heightened tooth sensitivity and lead to tooth loss.

Vaping also leaves the mouth dry as it exposes it to heat. The warmer and the drier the mouth temperature is, the more favorable it is for harmful bacteria. When there is a lack of saliva, chances of plaque buildup, tooth decay, and bad breath are higher. The sweet-flavored liquid in electronic cigarettes can also linger on the teeth and attack the enamel.

If you are experiencing teeth grinding, your condition may also worsen due to vaping. Vaping can cause you to grind or clench your teeth more often, and this can lead to tooth damage. The nicotine in electronic cigarettes can also cause the gums to swell, bleed, or become tender.

If you’re looking to get orthodontic treatment, you need healthy teeth and gums to qualify. Gum damage caused by vaping or smoking may affect your chances of getting your teeth alignment issues corrected.

Look After Your Oral Health

The best way to prevent the negative effects of vaping on your oral health is to quit the habit and not start it. It’s also crucial to maintain good dental care habits.

  • Drink plenty of water to stimulate salivary flow.
  • Brush properly at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste to strengthen the teeth. Spend at least two minutes when brushing and be sure to cover all areas.
  • Floss at least once daily to get rid of debris stuck between your teeth. Talk to your dentist or hygienist about proper flossing techniques for smokers.
  • Never miss your routine dental hygiene appointments and check-ups. Coordinate closely with your dental team to track your oral health.
  • Monitor your teeth and surrounding structures and let your dentist know should you notice anything unusual, or experience pain or discomfort you have not encountered before.

Are E-Cigarettes a Healthier Choice than Traditional Tobacco?

No, they’re not. Although e-cigarettes do not have tobacco, they still contain nicotine and other fine particles that can pose health risks, not only to your mouth but your entire body as well. It’s a misconception that e-cigarettes are the better option as they can be as harmful as traditional tobacco.

If you’re smoking tobacco or using electronic cigarettes and need help withdrawing from the habit, talk to your dental team. They’ll be able to provide you with support and professional advice throughout your cessation journey.
